This is what Serenity Silverstar, a forum member of a different forum, answered to that question:

Because they care about the game. Strange, but true, in this age of non-commital bastard corporates.

What Gaile is describing is called "Opportunity Cost" in economic terms (15 year old school lessons ftw!).
I do not see that connection. So if anyone in here can please explain that to me, it would be very appreciated.

Her explaination is:

I donĀ“t think that explains it at all.

I am familiar with the concept of an opportunity cost and I fail to see how that would relate to what Gaile said about the piggies.

The second part is just an excuse for recycling holiday content from last year.

Monetary value is irrelevant if the item is loved by a person.

I love some of my cheap 1.5k armor. I love some of my blue collector weapons. I love my mini pig since it matches my ranger's pig (my ranger had a pig since pre-searing). Even if it was expensive, i would have loved it too.

The idea of 'increasing the "value"' is bullshit
I couldn't agree more. I've always loved my minipig. It was (obviously) never about it's monetary value, but because my ranger's first long-term pet was a pig.

Overall, I'm ok with the storage we have now. It is tons better than what it used to be. But I must agree, for ANet to think that most people would keep 5 extra (presumably 6 total if, like me, you actually like the little bugger) non-stacking, nearly worthless, "anythings" is irrational, lazy, or both.

lol, ur bad getting stuff for lesser money... I got mine for 72p and I'm sure, there are also some, who got one for like 50p (those with the luck to bought enough for 10p/pig)

When you really want a cheap celestial pig, than you try to buy the 5 normal pigs as cheap as possible (for around 10-15p/pig), beecause you won't find anyone, who sells them atm for those prices around ...

those, which sell celestial pigs, are all greedy and sell them for far more than 50-75p...most greedy ***holes want them sell ingame still for 100p and some ectos -.-

It really wasn't too hard to get cheap pigs, either. I bought two Thursday before the event, gambling for a 3->1 pig trade (I had one from last year), and two more earlier this afternoon to get those last two for the trade. 10k each. All I did was post "WTB Dedicated Mini Pigs @ 10k ea" in Kamadan and browse the web until my search got near the top and someone PMed me with a sell offer. It took about 15-20 minutes each time (except the first buy Th. didn't require a district change, the second buy was much faster).

Pigs were higher (or harder to find low, at least) on Weds after the trade was widely known, and on Fri & Sat when all the "must have firsts" were buying, but all it takes is a little bit of patience.

no offence, but anyone buying Mini Celestial Pigs for those amounts must be an insane mini collector or just have too much money.
if i were ever to puchase one i wouldnt pay more than 5p..they look terrible.

I agree it's better than it was. My 12 mules still say hello though. I have 3 chars with just mods that I need some decent skins for...

So now we only have to wait untill Anet artificially inflates ecto prices so less people are able to wear FoW-armor. Because, well, if everyone is wearing FoW-armor, it isn't special enymore.

Why would they inflate ecto prices when they dropped them in the first place?

As soon as we know why they inflated the mini pig prices, weĀ“ll know the answer to that question!

So, what looks better:

The Celestial Pig? Or the original? I think I'll keep my original.

I like my original Piggeh.

I shall hug him and squeeze him and name him Oink!

I had seven of these little oinkers on my PvP mesmer just collecting dust. I now have two and a newly dedicated celestial mini-pig!

Also a party animal now, and have more storage space!

Man, I went away for too long.

I like my Celestial pig! Although the original pig looks awesome too.

I remember when I first saw the Celestial pig when I got one from a fortune last year and I was wondering why the mini wasn't Celestial.. I also tend to like Minis that glow. The Mandragor has the best effect though..

Well I successfully boycotted the event. I do feel a little better about it. If I want a celestail pig or rat, I'll just buy it out right and keep my one pig I didn't give away for free like all the others that I did give away for free.

Her explaination is:

I don´t think that explains it at all.
I took college level Micro and Macro economics and I, too, fail to see what opportunity cost has to do with it. At least not in the context that Serenity said it. Opportunity cost has to do with decisions, the "cost" is the value of the next best choice that could be made. Anytime you have to make a decision, there is opportunity cost. For the sake of the pig, you could: 1. Keep it. 2. Sell it. or 3. Give it away. What Serenity said is not opportunity cost. ArenaNet is, however, choosing to change the scarcity of the pig and this raises the value. I would say that what Serenity is describing is more like Utility (in regards to Gaile's post). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess ArenaNet felt the need to make the pig rare and desirable, and this was their only solution. So many people bitched and moaned last year after they opened a ton of Fortunes to get the Mini Pig, not knowing otherwise they would be available for everyone and their 21 accounts at the end of the festival.

At the request of in-game friends who've stockpiled ectos when they were cheap, and now request help to raise the price of the ecto so they are "worth selling"?
That said, I don't think ANet is price-fixing ecto.

I'm still convinced they price-fixed the minipig in order to benefit some player who'd complained to someone he knew at ANet that the numerous minipigs he'd hoarded weren't worth his while to sell.

And the concern is valid; I raised that same point earlier: if ANet will intervene in the economy at the request of some speculator to influence the price of minipigs, then for all we know whoever got them to do so might get them to intervene to fix the prices of other commodities too.

That's the problem with corruption - it erodes trust.

I agree people are greedy but i was offering 98k because there are alot of people who simply want to keep their pigs. besides, 98k is about 4 days farming in the desolation tops so i wasnt too worried. Now i have my original piggy and my celestial piggy and my celestial rat so I am now alot happier with this crappy stinkfest of an event than i was before. And happiness is worth far more than 98k.

I was trying to decide whether I wanted to have a celestial collection (I don't doubt there will be more) and whether it was worth buying a c_pig. In the end I improved my happiness by taking the c_rat out onto the plains of Jarin and having a good long look at him in the bright sunshine. After watching him scurry back and forth, I scratched my chin and did declare "no sir, I don't like it". So I...

...took it back inside and sold it to the first WTB I saw for 15K.
